Instructors

  • Teaching for the Family Signs programs is fun and inspirational. I love helping families improve their communication skills and the 1:1 or 1:3 teaching ratios are great. This is a great use of technology and a great way to connect with families across the state."

What equipment do I need to be a Family Signs instructor?

To be an instructor you will need:

    • A computer with a webcam
    • High-speed internet connection
    • Email

Family Signs instructors use their own computers with webcams and high-speed Internet connections. Classes are usually conducted from the instructors home although other locations may be used with prior approval.

What are the technical requirements for the high-speed Internet connection?

The Internet service should provide a consistent connection of at least 1.0 Mbps (upload/download). Go to www.bandwidthplace.com to test the speed of your computer.

Why I might need an audio connection?

Instructors and students might find it useful to have an audio connection available during the class. Many of the students will not know enough sign language in the beginning to use the video connection alone to ask detailed questions. Deaf instructors and students can use text chat on the selected video conferencing applications.

How often do the classes meet?

Most instructors schedule classes with their students for one half-hour each week at a set day and time. The actual schedule will be mutually agreed upon by the instructor and the student.

    What about curriculum materials?

Most students start with the Bravo Family Series curriculum, which is a series of 15 lessons that focuses on developing basic American Sign Language (ASL) conversational skills. However, if a student already has advanced sign language skills or special needs, other curriculum options are available.
